Red Nose Day 2024

A big thank you for you support this Red Nose Day.  We raised £95 for charity.

A huge well done to all our Reception children who performed their nativity Shine, Star, Shine.  Families enjoyed watching their children perform on stage. They all sang so well and we are very proud of them all.

Thank you for all the donations for Children in Need. We raised a fantastic amount of £81.70.

Black History Month 2023

This October, Blackfell has been engaging with Black History Month under the theme 'Saluting Our Sisters.' A whole school assembly was held to investigate the meaning of this year's theme. Each year group then explored the life of a different heroine:

  • Reception and Year 1: Mary Seacole (1805-1881), known for her nursing efforts during the Crimean War.
  • Year 2: Claudia Jones (1915 – 1964), remembered for her advocacy for racial equality, women's rights, and workers' rights.
  • Year 3: Bessie Coleman (1892-1926), the first African-American and Native-American woman pilot.
  • Year 4: Rosa Parks (1913-2005), who initiated the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  • Year 5: Mae Jemison (b. 1956), the first African-American woman in space.
  • Year 6: Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), known for leading hundreds to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Each year group engaged in a variety of activities and produced work reflecting their understanding and appreciation of these remarkable individuals. The children were very interested, asked thoughtful questions and enjoyed researching their assigned characters. The produced work will be displayed within the school, and additional information from each year group can also be found on the class pages.

Harvest Festival

As we approach the season of Harvest Festival we will be collecting donations of tins and non perishable food for  Washington Community Food Project . The need for our help increases year on year and thanks to the generosity of our local community we can help many families across Washington. Our assembly will be on 11th October. Please drop donations into school from Monday 9th October.  Any support is hugely appreciated. The items they are most often in need of include tinned potatoes, rice pudding, custard, tinned fruit, tinned vegetables, and jars of pasta and curry sauce.

School Games Mark Gold

We are delighted to announce that Blackfell have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

A Week of Aspirations and Inspirations at Blackfell

Our school recently hosted "Aspirations Week" aimed at inspiring our children about their futures and providing them with a broader understanding of their community and the wider world.

Our children in Year 1 and 2 embarked on a memorable journey visiting a local care home. This trip emphasised the importance of empathy, community service and the roles that care workers play in our society.

Meanwhile, the children from Year 3 and 4 had a chance to explore the Galleries Shopping Centre where they observed first-hand the bustling world of food retail. This visit served them well alongside their ongoing project of planning and opening a pop-up café. This project has seen them plan every aspect of the café from creating an appealing menu to designing a welcoming layout inspired by industry tips and tricks.

Year 5 and 6 had an exciting week filled with insightful talks from professionals from various fields.

A midwife shared her experiences in prenatal care and childbirth, broadening our pupils' understanding of this crucial role.  Visits from a financial advisor and an accountant demonstrated the practical applications of mathematics and its integral role in our economy. A representative from the youth offending service provided the pupils with a deeper understanding of the justice system, the value of second chances and how this service helps young people. Adding to the richness of the week was the visit from a soldier from the British Army. In his uniform, he shared his experiences and provided a vivid glimpse into life in the armed forces, highlighting a career that requires courage, discipline and dedication to serving our country. Bringing a touch of excitement to the week, a fireman not only shared about his important role but also brought along a fire engine for the children to explore. They were given the opportunity to try on the equipment, sit in the fire engine and even operate the hose, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Additionally, mock interviews were held, which gave the children a taste of the professional world and helped them learn important skills for their future career pursuits.

Aspirations Week has been a journey of discovery for our children, providing them with exposure to various careers and a broader understanding of the world around them. We are committed to providing such enriching experiences as part of our learning ethos, ensuring our pupils are well-prepared for their futures.
