Year 5 Summer 2021-22

Science - Life Cycles

In Science we have been learning about Life Cycles. This week we learned about animals whose life cycle involves a complete transformation called a metamorphosis. In our groups we created an information page about metamorphosis and drew some life cycles to inform others.

Geography - North America

In our Geography lesson we used our atlas to investigate the different countries of North America.

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

In school we completed some lovely activities to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. As well as learning more about the Queen and royal family, we learned and shared songs from through the decades in a whole school assembly. We designed a dress for the Queen and won the in-school competition. Finally we enjoyed an ice-cream on the field with our friends.

Our visit to the Mayor's Office

Year 5 were very privileged to be invited to visit the Mayor's Office in it's new home in the City Hall of Sunderland. Mayor Trueman welcomed us warmly and answered all our excellent questions. We had a great time and learned a lot about the role of the Mayor.

Art -The Mona Lisa

We are studying Leonardo Da Vinci as our famous artist this term.  With great care, we took time practising our sketching skills by creating self-portraits; we thought carefully about the position of the eyes, nose, ears and mouth.  We then applied this knowledge to copying the Mona-lisa and (by mixing our own colours) painted her.  Some of our work is proudly displayed in school!

Hoopstarz

As part of our Be Fit, Be Safe, Be Healthy week, we had a fitness session with the Hoopstarz. It was so much fun learning new skills and Miss Kitchen was really impressed with how much we could already do. We progressed to some advanced skills and played a fun game at the end.

Tag Rugby

We are really enjoying our P.E lessons in Year 5.  We are currently working on our tag rugby skills.  This lesson we focused on passing.

Our visit to Cragside

For our class visit we visited Lord Armstrong’s house in Northumberland—Cragside. We had a fantastic time finding out more about how he used the movement of water to create hydroelectric power. We toured his house, explored his grounds and finally ran off some energy at the play ground.

Change 4 Life

We also had a visit from the Change 4 life team from Sunderland. They talked to us about the food groups and making healthy choices and simple swaps to ensure we stay fit and healthy. In assembly, we learned how we can stay active this summer and had a practise!
