Year 4 Spring 2021-22

What do animals eat?

This term our new topic is Animals Including Humans. Today we recapped the terms herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. We then grouped animals based on what they eat.

Food Chains

This week in Science we have been exploring different food chains. We discussed what a food chain is and how we put them together. We enjoyed investigating what different animals eat and made our very own!

Division

In Maths we have been looking at division. We have been learning the method of short division and used the resources within the classroom to help us work out the answers. 

Dental Care

Today in Science we have been using our knowledge of teeth to help learn how we should look after them. We created informative posters outlining the best ways to care for our teeth. 

Chinese New Year

To celebrate Chinese New Year we read the story of Chinese New Year and sequenced the events. We then discussed what Chinese New Year was all about. After this we all decorated a paper plate with red, yellow and gold ready for our Chinese New Year display!

Computer Parts

Our new computing unit is called 'Hardware Investigators'. Today we have been developing our understanding of the parts which make up a computer. We had a fun class game of pairs to match the part with the role they play. 

Shared Reading

As part of our World Book Day celebrations we enjoyed spending some time with children in Reception. The children in Reception selected a book that they wanted us to read to them. We had lots of fun!

Anger

During PSHE we have been talking about what make us angry. We completed an activity looking at what our triggers are and what we can do to help keep us calm in these situations. 

Branching Story

Our new unit in Computing is all about PowerPoint. We worked together to structure different fairy tales in a format known as a branching story. This allowed us to think of alternative endings and how the story might have changed. We are looking forward to putting these onto a PowerPoint now!

Jarrow Hall- Anglo-Saxon Village

During our time in the Anglo-Saxon village we learnt about how houses were made, how the Anglo-Saxons would keep warm with a fire pit and how bread is made and clothing are made. We even enjoyed a story of Beowulf around the fire pit and joined in with some live actions and sound effects. 

Sutton Hoo

Our new History topic this term is The Anglo Saxons. Today we have been learning about Sutton Hoo and the items which have been discovered in the area. We enjoyed thinking about the people who own the items.

Who were the Anglo-Saxons?

During History we have been developing our understanding of who the Anglo-Saxon people were. We discussed how they arrived in Britain and what problems they might have faced on their arrival.

Gymnastics

Today we completed some gymnastics. We learnt how to balance in different ways and then practiced our jumping skills. We learnt how to do a quarter turn, half turn and full turn landing in the correct way!

Stretch

During PE we have been learning ho to complete different stretches. We learnt how to hold a bridge position and a shoulder stand. We enjoyed learning how to hold a shoulder stands even with no hands!

Safer Internet Day

To celebrate Safer Internet Day we have been learning about how to stay safe when using online games. We discussed how to respond to messages and what we would do in different scenarios. 

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day we enjoyed coming to school in out pajamas. Throughout the day we took part in lots of activities and enjoyed milk and cookies with a story.

World Book Day Activities

We took part in lots of book related activities today. These included writing a blurb for our favorite book, creating a book mark, acting out different stories, writing exciting stories and drawing pictures of our favorite characters.

Teeth Investigation

To help develop our understanding of how drinks damage our teeth we spent some time investigating the damage through using eggs. We soaked the eggs in the different drinks and can't wait to see what happens to them!

Light Up Box

In our DT unit we have been learning about light up boxes. today we spent some time decorating our own cubes so that we can create our very own light up boxes. We can't wait to see the finished result. 

Jarrow Hall- Runes, Magic and Medicine

In our session about runes, magic and medicine we created our very own good luck charm with Anglo-Saxon runes based on the letters in our names. We also learnt about what herbs were used to help cure illnesses such as toothaches, open wounds and coughs.

Famous Buildings

Our new Art topic this term is famous buildings. Today we discussed a range of buildings and identified what makes them special looking at their features. We enjoyed looking at the different styles of building.

Numbers 

In French we have been recapping numbers. We worked out some different number sequences and then we solved some sums. We enjoyed figuring out the answers!

Emotional Health

Today Year 3 and 4 were visited by our School Nurse Jenifer and Vicky. They were talking to use about emotional health. We covered what is a good friend is, how we are good friends, what good qualities of  our friends and then we shared this with our friends. We spoke about self esteem, what it means and how we should shout out what we are proud of ourselves for. We talked about the signs of bullying and the different types of bullying and also what we should do if we are being bullied or know somebody who is. We talked about   little feelings and big feelings and how to deal with negative feelings. We all shared         fantastic ideas to our friends. We enjoyed our  learning with Jenifer and Vicky.

 

Ten Commandments

During RE we enjoyed learning about the ten commandments.  We then worked in groups and acted out the commandments to see if our friends could guess the commandment. 

Hockey

Our new unit in PE this term is Hockey. Today we enjoyed learning how to hold the hockey stick correctly and keeping control of the ball. We then developed out understanding of a push pass. 

Book Tasting

We took part in a book tasting activity today. We all had a basket of books to choose from and this allowed us to investigate a range of different genres. We then wrote a short review explaining if we would carry on reading the book. 

Taj Mahal

This week we have been looking at the features of the Taj Mahal. We enjoyed looking at the symmetrical features of the building. We developed our tracing techniques. 

We Are All Different!

To celebrate our differences we worked in pairs to talk about how we are similar and how we are different to each other. We learnt that everyone is special in their own way and the world would be very boring if we were all the same!

Jarrow Hall- The Farm

During our visit we enjoyed learning about the farming life of an Anglo-Saxon and how they used their farms to create foods to help them live. We saw animals including pigs, cows, chickens and sheep. 

Jarrow Hall- Clothing and Textiles

Our final activity during our visit was all about clothing and textiles. We enjoyed learning about how the Anglo-Saxons created their own clothes and we had a go at weaving to understand the process of clothes being made during this period in history.
