Welcome to Year 5 Summer Term 24-25
Visit to Hope Church
Year 5 enjoyed a visit to Hope Church. We were very surprised to see that it didn't look like churches that we have seen pictures of. It had a cafe, tables and chairs and a soft play area. We learned that the church serves the local community in lots of different ways. Gavin, the vicar, talked to us about some of the services that they have in the church. If we wanted to, we got to taste the 'bread' and grape juice used during Holy Communion and to smell the oil used during baptism. Gavin explained what happens during a typical baptism in church including the 'dunking' in water. It was very interesting to hear that he has recently carried out a baptism in the sea at Seaham!
Visit to Gibside
What a brilliant day we had at Gibside. We started with a walk through the woods to the den building area where we worked in teams to build some fabulous dens.
Then we walked down to Strawberry Castle play park where we had our lunch and spent some time playing on the park.
Northern Gas Workshop- Energy Island
Today, we worked with Alex from Northern Gas Networks. During the workshop, Alex talked to us about climate change, global warming and Net Zero. Through an interactive quiz, we learned about renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and the advantages and disadvantages of both. We worked together in groups to research different types of energy production and then used our findings to create a Net Zero island.
Year 5 Colour Run
Year 5 had a great morning at the colour run. We completed a lap of the field and at various points along the way had coloured paint thrown at us. After completing the run, we slid down the slip and slide and enjoyed ice pops. Thank you, Year 6!
Year 5 Sport's Day
Year 5 had a brilliant time at their sports day. During the morning, we took part in lots of different races including: egg and spoon, football dribbling and skipping. Other events were a vortex throw and standing long jump. The final event of the day was a sprint race. First, second and third places were awarded points for their house teams and a massive well done to Willow and Oak who were joint winners.

Curling
As part of 'Be fit, be healthy' week, Year 5 have taken part in a curling workshop. Most of us had never tried the sport before and we had to work as a team to get our stones into the centre of the target. It was great fun!
Year 5 Health Week
This morning, Year 5 had a visit from Anthony who came to talk to us about healthy lifestyles. During the lesson we discussed how to keep our bodies healthy and looked at how to maintain a balanced diet. The main focus was looking at sugars and the impact that eating too much can have on our bodies. We learned that a can of Coca Cola has 10 tea spoons of sugar and that some bags of Haribo can have as many as 27! Anthony also showed us what too much fat can do to our arteries and we were able to look at and feel how heavy fat and muscle are.
