Curriculum Statement
At Blackfell Primary School, our curriculum is designed to ensure every child “Be the Best You Can Be.” We provide a rich, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that gives all pupils—regardless of background, need or starting point—a strong sense of belonging and the opportunity to achieve highly. Our curriculum is thoughtfully sequenced, clearly structured and built around essential knowledge, skills and vocabulary, enabling pupils to know more, remember more and do more over time.
We offer broad and balanced learning across all subjects, strengthened by high-quality teaching, meaningful use of technology and a wide range of enrichment experiences that deepen understanding and broaden horizons. From Early Years onwards, pupils develop confidence, curiosity and independence through purposeful play, structured learning and carefully planned progression.
Inclusion sits at the heart of our offer. We have high aspirations for all pupils, with tailored support for those who need additional help and appropriate challenge for those who grasp concepts rapidly. Our curriculum is underpinned by the 5Rs—relationships, resilience, resourcefulness, risk-taking and reflection—which promote positive attitudes, strong character and a secure sense of self. This supports pupils’ wider personal development, wellbeing and readiness for the next stage of education.
Subject leaders play an important role in monitoring the quality and impact of the curriculum. They check that teaching is coherent and that pupils retain key knowledge through regular retrieval practice, assessment and review. As a result, pupils make strong progress from their individual starting points, and outcomes are consistently at or above national expectations.
Outdoor learning, educational visits, theme weeks and a wide range of clubs ensure that every child has access to memorable experiences that expand their knowledge of the world and raise aspirations. Strong partnerships with families and the wider community further support children’s learning, wellbeing and engagement.
By the time pupils leave Blackfell, they are confident, articulate and well prepared for the next chapter of their education. They understand themselves as learners, feel valued as members of our community and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and personal qualities they need for future success.
