Curriculum Policy
The curriculum at Blackfell Primary School is built on our commitment to providing a high-quality, inclusive education that enables every child to “Be the Best You Can Be.” Our curriculum policy sets out the principles, structures and expectations that guide teaching and learning across the school, ensuring a coherent, ambitious and well-sequenced offer for all pupils.
Our curriculum is designed to build knowledge and skills progressively across all subjects, ensuring that learning is carefully sequenced so pupils revisit, deepen and apply key concepts over time. This cumulative approach secures strong foundational understanding and supports pupils in making meaningful connections within and across subjects. By establishing secure building blocks early on, we enable pupils to tackle more complex content with confidence and independence as they move through the school.
A commitment to developing oracy—supporting pupils to speak clearly, listen actively, express ideas confidently and engage in purposeful dialogue—is embedded throughout our curriculum. We believe that strong oracy skills are fundamental to learning: they enhance understanding, strengthen reasoning, support vocabulary development and build self-esteem. Effective communication is also a vital life skill, enabling our pupils to participate fully in school, contribute to their community and achieve success in future education and employment.
We recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and engaged, and when the curriculum reflects both their needs and the diverse community we serve. Our curriculum aims to secure strong progress for every pupil, regardless of background, starting point or additional need, by providing clear progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subjects. Through high-quality teaching, purposeful enrichment and meaningful use of technology, we strive to equip our pupils with the knowledge and personal qualities they need to succeed now and in the future.
This policy sets out the intent, implementation and impact of our curriculum, describing how we design learning, support staff in delivering it and evaluate its effectiveness. It should be read alongside subject-specific documentation, teaching and learning guidance, and other statutory policies that contribute to the overall educational offer at Blackfell Primary School.
