Welcome to Year 1/2 Summer 24-25
Our Visit to Newcastle Central Mosque
Year 1 & 2 had a fantastic morning visiting Newcastle Central Mosque. We met Brother Khadim who taught us all about the mosque and what happens in it, the Muslim special book known as the Qur'an, Muslim prayer, and the 5 pillars of Islam. He demonstrated the call to prayer, and we took part in following some of the actions carried out during the prayers that take place 5 times a day. Brother Khadim showed us a special toothbrush used by Muslims. The toothbrush is made from tree bark and has a strong, distinct scent - he even gave us some to bring back to school! It was a brilliant morning and we learnt so much being immersed in the environment.
Art: Giuseppe Arcimboldo elements
We have been learning about the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo in our Art lessons this half term. We took inspiration from his portraits on the 4 elements - wind, air, earth and water - and created our own collages. Can you spot where each of the elements has been represented?
Our Visit to Hope Community Church
We visited Hope Community Church in Oxclose and met Gavin, the vicar. He taught us all about creation, and we also learnt about good news. We were given the opportunity to taste the bread, which is known to Christians as the body of Christ, and drink the children's version of the sacramental wine which represents the blood of Christ. We spent some time speaking with visitors from America who taught us a song. They then helped us to create playdough demonstrating how we can make new things every day from scratch the same way God did when he created the world.
Colour Run
Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic morning completing the Colour Run. We all got very wet and covered in paint! We all received a medal and a well deserved ice pop afterwards. Thank you to Y6 for organising such a fun event.
Planting Seeds
We are learning about plants in Science. This week, we have been thinking about what plants need to grow and be healthy. We decided they need soil, water, sunlight and to be grown in the correct temperature. We have set up an experiment to test our thinking. Each group has planted some seeds but we have changed one thing we give to each pot - one pot will be given everything it needs to grow; one has no soil; one has no water; one is in the cupboard; and the final pot is in the freezer! We predict the seeds in the pot that have been given everything will grow but the others will not. We can't wait to see if we are correct!
Global Warming Workshop
Today we were joined by Alex from Northern Gas Networks who introduced us to the idea of Global Warming and Net Zero through an interactive and hands-on workshop. We explored the impact warm water can have on the rate ice melts and compared this with cold water. As a class we discussed what was causing our world to heat up and what we can do to slow it down. It was a very fun way of learning about such an important issue.
Curling
We took part in a curling lesson! We had never done this before and were initially a little unsure of the game, but we did a fantastic job, learnt a brand new skill and by the end, some of us were right on target!
Summer Disco
We had a fantastic time singing, dancing and enjoying some food at our summer disco. Thank you to school council for organising such a fun night for us to spend with our friends!
Gibside
Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic day on our whole school visit to Gibside. We spent the morning on a nature walk around the grounds, before going to the park where we had lots of fun! After lunch, we went on a minibeast hunt around the walled garden and woodland areas. It was a lovely day spent outdoors with our friends.
Science and Engineering Workshop
Year 1 and 2 were treated to a fantastic performance all about Science and Engineering. The workshop was really interactive and we had to help the characters solve some problems linked to Science and Engineering using our problem solving skills. We did really well and successfully helped them find a baby bird!
Keeping Healthy and Active Workshop
Year 1 and 2 were visited by Anthony from Keep Active who came to tell us all about how to keep ourselves active and what to eat for a healthy, balanced diet. As part of the workshop, he showed us the size and weight difference between 5lbs of muscle and 5lbs of fat. He also showed us a model which demonstrated how fat can build up in our arteries and slow down the movement of our blood vessels. Anthony also explained that there are 10tsps of sugar in a can of Coke and 8tsps of sugar in a chocolate bar. When we counted out each teaspoon full of sugar, it actually filled a whole glass - we were really shocked! We learnt a lot of new information and even had some fun doing some exercise!
Sports Day
Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic time on sports morning! We completed 6 events including sack race, egg and spoon race, long jump, vortex throw, obstacle course, and running race. We showed excellent team spirit and tried our very best. Well done to Oak and Pine who were our overall joint winners for KS1 and Early Years!
R.E-The Good Samaritan
We listened to the story ‘The Good Samaritan’. First we discussed the word ‘Samaritan’ and learnt it meant, ‘a person that helps other people’. As we listened to the story we discussed each scenario and the choices the passes by made. Together, we shared our thoughts and opinions about the choices the passes by made and what might of happened to the man if the ‘Good Samaritan’ had not stopped to help. Next, we discussed in groups how we had shown acts of kindness to others either at home or school and shared some examples with each other. Finally, we acted out each scene in the story and thought about how we could be a really ‘Good Samaritan’ in our own lives.
Well done everyone!
