Welcome to EYFS Summer Term 24-25
Planting Runner Beans
Our topic this half term is green fingers, the children got the opportunity to plant some runner beans for our garden area outside. We began by discussing what the bean looked like, and what we would need to plant the bean. We each got a small pot and wrote our names on, we then each got a handful of compost and filled our pot up. After we had filled our pot, we then had to put one finger into the soil to make a hole, we then got a bean and placed it inside of the soil. We were very excited to take the pots outside and water them using our watering cans. We each placed our pots next to the window, and we will keep a watch to see if they grow! We then got together to discuss and look at pictures of runner beans and talk about the different features. The children all enjoyed the activity, everybody showing good listening and following instructions.
VE Day
To celebrate VE Day, the children learned about World War 2 and the effects it had on people and children. The children then designed a picture on a piece of bunting to remember these events so that we can decorate the school with bunting on the anniversary of VE Day.
Curling
Early years had a great time learning to curl this morning. We found out how to play by trying to get the curling stones in the middle circles. We took it in turns in our house teams. Some of us were very impressive by the end, showing great target and force! Well done early years, lovely turn taking too!
Maths- How many more?
This afternoon in maths, we continued our learning about adding. Earlier in the week we were introduced to the word add and equal and their symbols. In todays lesson we played a game with a friend, one person selected the first number (1-5) and counted out that amount of cubes, they then had to close their eyes. The other person selected a number (1-5) and put that amount of cubes with the starting amount. The first person then had to open their eyes and try and work out how many more had been added. They then worked together to write their addition number sentence. There was some great problem solving skills along with counting and team work. Well done Early Years!
Northern Gas Workshop
This morning, early years were joined by Alex from Northern Gas. She explained what northern gas do and then moved on to talking about global warming. She explained that bad gasses are causing our environment to get hotter. We were able to identify the hot and cold places around the world. Ayla was the. selected to be the earth, Alex asked the rest of us if we sometimes leave the television on when we aren’t watching it, if we leave the tap running brushing our teeth or if we went in the car to school. For each time we answered yes, Alex added another blanket around Ayla, she ended up getting very warm! Alex explained that this was global warming. We then looked at ice cubes and what happens when warm water is added to ice, the penguins ended up with no ice left! Super listening and great taking part early years.
Curious investigators show
This morning the children had a visit from the Curious Investigators to demonstrate Science and Engineering through an interactive show. The children were introduced to the characters Scribble and Notebook. The children had to help the characters to solve problems by investigating and experimenting with different equipment and recycled items. The children helped the characters in the end to save the parrot when it hatched from the egg. Great team work, ideas and problem solving. As well as having fun.
Be fit, be healthy week!
Visit from Healthy Schools
Today we were joined by Anthony who works for Sunderland councils healthy team. He came in to talk to us about healthy diet, he spoke about different food groups. Many of us were great at giving examples of different types of foods for each group. We also found out why it was important to eat certain foods, finding out that milk and dairy was good for our bones and teeth and protein important to give us muscles. We then spoke about sugar and how too much sugar can make us feel unwell and cause our teeth to rot. We found out how much sugar was in a chocolate bar and in a can of Coca Cola, we counted as Anthony put the tea spoons of sugar into the glass. We then spoke about exercise and how it is important to keep our bodies healthy. We played the bean game and finished off with some stretching through yoga.

Potion Making
For part of our outdoor provision this week, many of the children have loved making different potions using loose parts from flowers and plants. They have created potions which link to our story Jack and The Beankstalk like sleeping potions for the giant or potions to make Jack super speedy! They have enjoyed tipping and pouring, exploring capacity, many talking about the shapes of the containers too, linked to 3D shapes.
Literacy- The Train Ride
In literacy, we re listened to our class story the train ride. We were asked to re call the things that the characters could see out of the window on the train ride. Miss. Dodds then modelled how to draw a map and we worked together to re create the map of the journey the train from the story took. We were then tasked to work in small groups to re create our own maps using the events from the story, there was some lovely team work where children spoke about what could be seen out of the window of the train. Children sounded out and labelled the key things too. Some super writing and amazing map work too!
