Welcome to Year 6's Summer Term
Fire Survival
If you need to survive in the wild, what do you need? The answer is simple: food shelter and warmth. As part of our survival training, we looked at the different methods that could be used to safely start a fire such as using a magnifying glass, a bow drill, batteries and flint and steel. We were taught about the dangers of fire and how to keep ourselves and others safe.
Water Filters
Kingswood Outdoor Adventure set us the challenge of purifying dirty water by creating filters. We used a range of l materials: grass, cotton wool, charcoal and even a sock to filter the water. It was certainly a lot cleaner at the end!
Tackle it!
Working with Ed from The Foundation of Light, we looked at the issue of alcohol and drug abuse and the long term effect caused by illegal substances. we focused in on the power of peer pressure and how we can make the right choices.
Enterprise
We were split into 5 groups and given £5 each. Our task was to make the most profit we could as a team. We created a range of products to be sold at our school picnic: keying's, door hangers, painted canvases, frozen smoothies and cakes. Two groups decided to create games to entertain the public; these included a celebrity football shoot out, a tombola and a guess the name game. We made a great profit and will be using the money for an activity to celebrate leaving.
Super Shelters
Part of our survival training with staff from Kingswood Outdoor Adventure involved shelter making. We were given string, canvas and tree branches to build a camp that would keep us dry and safe. We were set the challenge of also incorporating a shelter that would enable the collection of rain water. It involved a lot of communication and team work. It was great fun!
