Year 6 Autumn 2021-22

Back to School!

Year 6 were delighted to return to school to see their friends and start their learning journey this year. They also loved being back in the dinner hall for lunch!

 

Netball

Year 6 have really enjoyed the start of our new P.E unit- netball. In this session we focussed on chest passes and over arm passes. We then carried out some defensive activities.

 

Beamish Museum

We had a great day at Beamish Museum focussed on life during WW2, linking with our History! We started our day with Kevin at the farm where we found out what life would be like for a child who was evacuated including what jobs they would need to do! We then learnt some marching commands that were given to home guards. We explored the pit village and found out about the coal mines. Finally, we visited the town and explored a range of buildings and shops.

Anne Frank- Research

We are all really enjoying our new Biography unit based on Anne Frank! This week, we have been researching Anne Frank and placing our information on timelines. We will use this information to write our biographies in Literacy.

 

Science: Electricity Games

Year 6 had a brilliant morning, planning and making their own working Electricity games in groups. They used their knowledge of the unit to create circuits and designed the front of the board based on electric symbols. They were all fantastic and once tested, we evaluated the outcome. Well done Year 6! A great Science session!

 

Harvest Festival

We have celebrated Harvest within our class. We collected together our donations for the food bank. We then discussed what Harvest festival is and completed our own harvest prayers.

 

P.E- Fitness

This half term in P.E, we are focussing on building on our fitness through a range of skills and lessons. Today, we recorded our baseline scores and will reflect on these at the end of the half term. 

Design Technology- Using circuits for motors

Next week, we will move on to building our fairground rounds. They will use a motor to allow them to rotate around an axis. Today, we worked on ensuring our motors and circuits worked.

Christmas Lunch

Thank you to the cooks in school, we all enjoyed a lovely Christmas dinner!

PSHE- Peer Bingo!

In our first week, back we spent time talking to one another and developing our social skills. We talked to everyone in the class to try and identify some similarities and differences to one another. 

 

Online Safety

In Computing, we have revisited online safety. We discussed safety features that can help to protect us, such as fire walls and talking to a trusted adults. We also discussed risks such as viruses and not trusting all those we speak to online. Year 6 were able to do this confidently. 

PSHE- Personal Space

As part of our PSHE based on uncomfortable feelings, we covered Personal Space and the different zones of personal space. We discussed which were appropriate for in school and how we should respond if we feel uncomfortable with how close someone is to us. In the hall, we measured out the different zones. 

 

RSE- Safe and Unsafe Touch

During our second RSE session, we discussed private and public parts. We then discussed safe and unsafe touch and placed some different scenarios under the headings. We spent time talking about why it would depends and how important consent is. We also practiced saying no firmly and how to respond in different scenarios. 

RSE: Valuing all families

Today, with our visitors from Together For Children, we explored different family types, discussing similarities and differences. We also talked about what made a family safe and what ingredients were needed within families. As a class, we were able to share our own families situations. We also talked about how we should value each other and remember to be respectful.

Nissan

Year 6 had a great day out at Nissan. We took part in a range of different group activities and explored the car factory. We found out about the local industry and what jobs we could apply for in the future. 

Children In Need

Year 6 took part in raising money for Children in Need by wearing non-school uniform. There was some wonderful Pudsey tops and accessories. 

 

Christmas Party

We had a great Christmas party- we enjoyed making our own Christmas hats, dancing and playing some classic party games like corners! 

Worry Spirals

As part of our PSHE, we have been discussing a range of emotions. We then explored big worries and little worries and we wrote these privately on our worry spirals. We then discussed what we can do to help to ease any worries we have. 

Outdoor Learning

We really enjoyed our outdoor learning session. We took part in several team building activities including night lines, raising a flag and clue hunting. We worked together really well and show some fantastic qualities.

Mental Health Awareness Day

Year 6 had a great day in yellow celebrating Mental Healthy awareness day! We enjoyed yellow fruit, creating our soothe box and taking fun snaps with our friends! In class, we developed our own posters around how to stay positive and what strategies we could use. We talked about the importance of being kind to each other and how our words could impact someone else in both a positive and negative way. 

Book Fair Comes To School!

We have enjoyed paying a visit to the book fair and exploring some new texts. Some of us even made some purchases to add to our growing collection of books to read!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Black History Month- Proud to be me!

This month has been Black history month, we have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. We have completed a fact file about him. In our PSHE session we discussed the word 'proud' and what this meant. We shared our ideas and thought about why Martin Luther King should be proud. We then completed a segregation activity and thought about how this could make us feel. Finally we considered why we should be proud of ourselves and what we dream for in our futures. 

Anti-Bullying Week

During Anti-Bullying week in school, Year 6 have explored the theme: One kind Word. We We designed our own socks and took part in a range of activities where we found out about the types of bullying and how we can put a stop to it. 

Ice Cream Reward

After our visit from Ofsted, children enjoyed ice cream (even in the snow)!

DT- Fair Ground Rides

Our final DT lesson saw us create our fairground rides in groups. We used an axel and a pully connected to a motor (circuit). We all worked together in teams to create the final outcome! Well done Year 6, great team work.
