Year 6 Spring 2021-22

Namste! Yoga in P.E

 

In P.E this term, Children have enjoyed taking part in different yoga poses and flow. We have discussed how important it is to take deep breaths and tense our muscles during the holds.

 

Safer Internet Day

This years Internet Safety focussed on online gaming. We were introduced to an alien who we name Bob! We talked about common features that can be found on online games. We then discussed communication on these games and how we should respond to certain messaged. Finally, we wrote some tips to Bob about how he could stay safe when gaming online. 

Dance

This half term, we have been lucky enough to be joined by Nicky the dance coach. She has worked with us on street dance, we have put together some routines and worked in small groups to develop our own choreography. 

Developing our Sewing Skills

Year 6 began their DT unit for this  term, we will be designing and making our own draw string bags. We have begun by experimenting with our sewing types including the running stitch, cross stitch and the whip stitch. Great resilience Year 6!

Sculpting our vases with clay

Continuing with our Art, we used our plans and techniques from previous Art lessons to create our vases from clay. We used different techniques to mould the shape and add decorative features. Once dried, we will seal and paint them following our plans. 

 

 

Comic Relief: Pose with a nose!

Year 6 enjoyed learning more about comic relief and finding out about a little boy named Teddy from County Durham who accessed a local charity in the North East through funding from comic relief. We discussed why helping others was important and how charity can support this! At the end of the session, we enjoyed trying the comic relief pose with a nose poses!

Sewing Our Final Products

In DT this week, we have finished sewing our tie-dye drawstring bags. We used a running stitch and a whip stitch. Through the hem, the draw string was inserted. The bags hold together well and over Easter will be firmly sewn together using a machine as many of the children intend to use them on their visit to Derwent Hill. 

Easter Egg Competition Entries

Our egg competition this year was based on the Queen's Jubilee. We had some fantastic entries in year 6, with lights and all! Our winner was Isabelle, runners up were Chloe and Amber. Well done to all who took part. 

Designing our own Science Investigation

(Shadows and Light)

This half term our science has focussed around light. We worked as small groups to develop our own lines of enquiry in to shadows and light. Some of use investigated coloured filters, other size and other darkness. 

Chinese New Year

After finding out about Chinese New Year, we made some of our own Chinese fortune telling dragons using some origami skills. We found out about it being the year of the Tiger. We also discussed how the colour red traditionally is for luck.

 

 

Valentines Day

Today we wore read and donated to Mind as part of our Valentines celebrations. At the end of the day, we discussed the term love and developed our own Valentines tokens to present to one of our loved ones at home tonight. We talked about healthy relationships and how we should be thankful for those that we have.

Partner Yoga poses and flows

To end our P.E unit on Yoga, we developed our own partner yoga flows We practiced different poses, then worked together to create our flows. We then shared them with the class. 

Wellbeing: Look How We Have Grown

Today in school, we all carried out a Wellbeing session based around personal growth. In year 6, we explored our  own personal growth since we were in Year 2. We compared a photo of ourselves from then to now and discussed the physical changed but also the changes within ourselves and how we have changed as people. We talked about what we had overcome and this included our time during Covid. Year 6 were reflective in this and came up with some great tips to encourage personal growth. 

Design Technology: Tie dying our material for our bags

Today, we have begun tie dying our fabrics ready to sew to create our mini draw string bags. We discussed different techniques to create different patterns and ensured we had some contrasting colours. 

 

Our Tie Dye Bags

We completed and evaluated our bags, we discussed whether they met the purpose for the intended user. We decided we wanted them to be more secure but that overall we really liked the design and could see how it would be used in a day to day context. 

Easter Cards

We used our sewing skills to create our Easter cards. We hope you all have a fantastic Easter and we look forward to our final term when returning. 

Carrying out our Science Investigations

(Shadows and Light)

After designing our own key question and agreeing on a method, we completing our shadow investigation. We ensured our tests were fair by changing only one thing. We also discussed our findings and observations with the class. 

Geography Work - Investigating Natural Resources

Our Geography work this term involves finding out about how natural resources are used to produce energy.  Year 6 enjoyed researching information on how fossil fuels are used to produce electricity and heat.

Moulding Vases

As part of our Art work this term, Year 6 are designing and creating their own vase.  In preparation for working with clay, we used playdough to help practise moulding different shapes and patterns whilst using a range of different cutting and moulding techniques.  Our findings were then built into our final design.

 

World Book Day- Shared Reading

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed celebrating World Book Day. They came to school in pyjamas and enjoyed reading and sharing books with younger pupils in Year 2. We are also going to enter a national competition to create a new World Book Day voucher. Pictures of their entries will be uploaded on to our class page once completed!

Painting our vases following our designs

We have now completed the painting stage of our vase designs and we followed our plans to complete this. They are looking fantastic and we will post the final versions soon! Well done Year 6, excellent creativity!

 

 

 

P.E: Volleyball

Year 6 are really enjoying their volleyball unit. So far we have covered high catches and set passes. It was great to get some 2 V 2 rally's going today. Well done Year 6!

 

Our Clay Vases

We have also now completed our clay vases following our sketch designs. We evaluated them in our books discussing the elements which we found trickier, many found the painting hard on the smaller more intricate parts of their designs. They all look fantastic and children have taken them home this week.
