Year 6 Summer 2021-22

Science- The Circulatory System

We have started our new Science topic, we found out about the circulatory system and the 4 main components (the heart, veins, arteries and blood). We created our own circulatory systems using arteries (red straws) and veins (blue straws). We discussed the parts of the heart and how the blood flows around our body. 

Blackfell Leaver Hoodies

Year 6 were delighted to receive their leavers hoodies. A huge thank you to Jack's Mum for organising this and Miss. Dodds also loves hers too!

 

 

 

 

Design Technology: Taste Testing a Ploughman's Lunch

Year 6 have begun their Food unit within Design Technology which is based on Great British dishes. The first week saw us discussing what a savoury dish is. We then explored what a Ploughman's lunch is and taste tested some of the different elements before designing their own.

 

 

The Forbidden Corner

Change 4 Life

We were joined this morning by Change 4 life Sunderland. They discussed how to maintain a healthy life style including diet and exercise. They showed us some of the negative impacts that can be had if we do not keep ourselves healthy! 

 

 

 

Arriving in Keswick

On Friday, we enjoyed visiting Keswick, playing in the park, eating ice creams and playing by the lake. 

Group 1: Canoeing

Group 1 enjoyed Canoeing across Derwent water, they rowed over to the island where they were able to explore and rowed back. There was a small breeze present so we had to adapt some of our rowing techniques.

Group 1- Big Swing

It was great to see all of Group 1 made it on to the Big Swing! They climbed up to the platform then took a leap into the air!

Group 2: Gorge Walking

Group 2 enjoyed  an icy Sunday morning walk up a gorge. They were all a little shocked how cold it was. Again they showed excellent team work, supporting and encouraging each other through challenging parts of the walk. They enjoyed sliding down natural slide and jumping into pools of water.

OAA- P.E Lesson 1

Our unit in P.E is outdoor adventure activities. In our first session we explored our communication skills. We began in pairs relying on one another to stand up linked. We then moved on to some blind folded activities working in pairs.  We all worked very well together!

OAA- P.E Lesson 2

What a fun lesson our second OAA P.E session was! Children were instructed to work together to create their own rowing boat, they must ensure they were holding the persons feet behind. We then completed some team challenges. 

 

 

   

 

Transition Visit from the School Nurse

Year 6 have begun their transition work. We had a visit from the school nurse today who spoke to use about their service and how they could support us. They talked about staying healthy and about mental health. 

 

 

 

 

 

Heart Dissection

To finish off our unit on the Human body in Science, we went across to Oxclose Academy where Mrs. Nossiter helped us to take part in a heart dissection. We found out about the four chambers and about the anatomy of the heart. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Be Safe, Be Fit, Be Healthy!

 

Science- Impact of Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking 

During our Science unit based on the human body, we used each one- teach one to share some key effects of smoking on the human body. We also explored what effects drug misuse and alcohol can have. 

Year 6 Derwent Hill

Common Room/Dinner Hall

During our free time on the evenings, we enjoyed Bingo and a party on the Saturday. We also enjoyed the food at Derwent Hill during our meal times where we would meet in the Dining Hall. 

Low Ropes

Both groups (and staff) enjoyed the low ropes course together. They were able to climb, swing and balance their way through the course!

Group 2: canoeing

Group 2 enjoyed canoeing on Derwent Water for their first activity. They worked as a team to get the boats to the water and strapped together. They then had a practise of their canoeing skills. They worked as a team to find the right method for them. They then canoed to the island and explored the wildlife. Well done group 2!

Group 2: Climbing Castlehead

Group 2 enjoyed a walk up Castlehead. Again they worked well as a team and encouraged each other on the walk. There was some challenging parts to the walk but all children done fantastic. They found paths and scrambled up rocks. Well done group 2, you done great and were rewarded with fantastic views.

Ice Cream Treat

A huge well done to Year 6 for completing their SATS this week. They all tried incredibly hard and we are very proud of them!

 

Art

 Within our Art lessons, we are studying Monet and the Impressionist movement.  We mixed colours to create a landscape of Penshaw monument, carefully applying paint strokes in Monet's style.

 

  

 

 

Design Technology: A Seasonal Fruit Crumble

As part of our cookery unit, we discussed seasonal fruits for this time of the year. We then used apples and rhubarb to make our own fruit crumble. We all gave them a try with ice cream! Sports Day!

Year 6 had a brilliant final sports day! They all did fantastic taking part in a range of activities! A huge well done to Maple who won the overall afternoon! 

 

Group 1: Climbing High Rigg

Group 1 enjoyed climbing High Rigg, they were able to see the spectacular views from the top and even had a go at some scrambling and bouldering skills. 

Group 1- Gorge Walking

A great time was had by Group 1 on gorge walking. They all took part working their way through the gauge. It was great to see their team work shining through. There was some risk takers at the end who enjoyed the ultimate plunge into the chilly water! 

Group 2: The Big Swing

Group 2 were very brave taking on the big swing! The all took risks and pushed their limits, we are very proud. There was excellent team work from the safety team  helping each other safely get down from the swing and the encouragement they gave each other was fantastic.
