Year 5 Spring 2022-23

 

Archery

During our new PE unit we have been learning all baout Archery. We spent some time developing an understanding of how to hold the bow and arrow and practiced our target shooting skills. We then played some target games as a team.

Chinese New Year

To celebrate Chinese New Year we tasted some different Chinese foods. We enjoyed trying noodles, egg fried rice, vegetable spring roles and prawn crackers. We were very brave trying new things and found we enjoyed msot of them. 

Times Tables

To start Number Day we enjoyed completing a times table related activity. We completed a colour by times table sheet where we quizzed ourselves on our times table knowledge. 

Beacon of Light- Sport

To start off our visit we took part in a sports session with some expert coaches. We enjoyed playing team games, stuck in the mud and races with tennis rackets, footballs, basket balls and even bouncy hoppers. Even Miss Hough enjoyed taking part!

Beacon of Light- Herritage Trail

Our final session was to walk around the site and look at the different statues and significant buildings. We learnt more about the football clubs history and herritage and the links to mining. 

Ukulele

In music we have been learning how to play the ukulele. To begin with we spent some time learning about the history of the ukulele, the parts of the ukulele and how to hold the ukulele correctly. We then learnt how to play chord C. 

Charles Fazzino

Our new unit in Art is all about Cityscapes. We have been learning about Charles Fazzino and how he developed cityscapes to make them look 3D. We explored the use of bright, bold colours and layering techniques to create this look. 

Year of The Rabbit

To develop our understanding of Chinese New Year we learnt about what the year of the rabbit is and how it is decided. We then completed some fact files about this and why it is special. 

Number Day

To celebebrate Number Day we enjoyed taking part in a Number morning. We completed a range of activities looking at arithmetic, number investigations, code breaking and maths games. We worked in groups with different children and enjoyed developing our team work skills as well.

Beacon of Light- Club History

We moved on to a session looking at the football clubs history and we saw the development of the clubs badge over the years. We even looked at the different strips from Retro to New. We enjoyed trying on the different tops. 

Mental Health Week

This years theme for mental health week has been Let's Connect. As a class we discussed who we have strong relationships with and how we can build relationships with others to help build our connections. 

Rainbow Colours

To celebrate World Book Day we enjoyed our theme of 'Read the Rainbow'. We came to school dressed as colours of the rainbow or our favourite book characters. We enjoyed reading a range of rainbow books this week!

Division

In Maths we have been looking at division and using the bus stop method to work out our answers. We have used multiplication grids and cubes to help work out our groupings and solve different problems. 

Using Different Mediums

In Art we have been learning about city scapes and how different times of day make city scapes look different. We used paints, pencils, pens and crayons to create our own backgrounds replicating different times of the day.

Wear Green

To help raise money for the NSPCC we came to school wearing green. We enjoyed a range of activities and recapped what was said during our NSPCC assembly so we can remember what the charity is there to support us with. 

Beacon of Light- Mining

We learnt all about the coal mining herritage around Sunderland and Country Durham and were lucky enough to speak to some people who used to work in the mines. They taught us some songs and even showed us some different mining equipment. 

Ink Detailing

In Art we are continuing to look at cityscapes and we have been thinking about the small details which can be missed when using materials such as watercolours. We then completed a city scape using ink pens adding small patterened details to the image. This required lots of concentration!

Shared Reading

As part of World Book Day we enjoyed taking part in some shared reading with children in Year 1. We all spent some time choosing books and sharing them with year 1 children. It was lvoely to read some different stories together.
