Year 5 Summer 2022-23

The King's Coronation

In Year 5, the pupils celebrated the king's coronation by sketching his portrait using pencils for shading. They learned about the traditions and importance of the coronation ceremony and expressed their understanding through their art and written work.

Friction Investigation

In year 5, we conducted an investigation on friction. We explored how different surfaces affect friction by using a force meter. The goal was to measure the force required to overcome friction between various surfaces. We predicted that rough surfaces would generate more friction than smooth surfaces.  We tested the amount of friction on the playground, the class carpet, the decking area and the KS2 hall.

Levers and Pulleys

We enjoyed looking at how levers and pulleys, which if used correctly, can make everyday tasks easier.  We created our own class pulley and mini levers.

Aspirations Week - Visitors

Wow! What a week we've had! Aspirations Week was brilliant and our Year 5 children had the chance to see their future careers come to life. We had some amazing guests from different fields: a firefighter, a soldier, an NHS worker, a youth offending officer, a financial advisor, and an accountant. They gave us a fascinating insight into their day-to-day lives, Each speaker brought their job to life, showing us how the things we learn in school are used in the real world.  The children left feeling excited about their futures and we can't wait to see where their aspirations take them. Here's to dreaming big and reaching for the stars!

Angles

We have been learning about angles during our Maths lessons. We've explored acute, obtuse, right, and reflex angles, and have been measuring and drawing them with protractors. It's been a fun, hands-on way to learn!

Creating The Mona Lisa

We enjoyed sketching and painting our own versions of the famous Mona Lisa, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's renowned artwork. We experimented with mixing colors and aimed to replicate the subtle shading and blending techniques used by da Vinci. While staying true to the original painting, we added our own artistic touches, creating unique interpretations.

Fencing

During our Health and fitness week, we really enjoyed learning new fencing skills.  We were able to apply a range of different rules to our own mini games.  The coach was really pleased at how quickly we applied our new skills!

Aspirations Week - Interviews

Aspirations Week was not only about learning from professionals but also about our Year 5 children exploring their personal interests. Each child had the opportunity to dive into a career of their choice, research it thoroughly and share their discoveries with the class. This exploration helped them understand the skills and education needed for different careers, fostering their curiosity and ambition.

But that's not all! The grand finale of the week was a simulated job interview related to the career each child had researched. This exercise aimed to give them a realistic taste of what it's like to be in a job interview, teaching them how to respond to questions with confidence and professionalism.

It was truly inspiring to see them handle their 'interviews' with such maturity. These experiences have surely prepared them for future success and we can't wait to see where their dreams take them next!

Water Resistance

Year 5 pupils explored water resistance by testing various shapes for their level of resistance to water. This experiment helped them understand how materials react to water and which shapes move more quickly through it.

Inventors

As part of our work on William Armstrong, we investigated the Industrial revolution and inventions that have changed the world since.

Sports Day

The weather was beautiful when we participated in our annual sports day.  We competed in a range of different events: egg and spoon, standing long jump, vortex throw, football speed dribble and sprint races.  well dode to Willow who won this year's event!

Food Technology - Burgers

Year 5 turned into a bustling burger kitchen today! We sliced, diced, and prepped in the morning, then sizzled and cooked in the afternoon. The children mastered frying, baking, and air frying, creating a feast of delicious, homemade burgers. We wrapped up with a clean kitchen and full bellies. A fantastic day of hands-on learning and culinary creativity in Year 5
