Welcome to Year 1's Spring Term 2016

Pirate Zumba

To link with our topic we have been doing some Prate Zumba during PE lessons! We have all loved dancing to the theme tune from Pirates of the Caribbean and pretending to be pirates as we dance!

Ahoy there, pirates!

Year 1 had a fantastic trip to Hartlepool Marina as we climbed aboard the HMS Trincomalee and took part in a pirate workshop! As part of the work shop, we compared the life of sailors and pirates and became archaeologists searching for clues in some sand. We loved looking at the different items a pirate would have had and guessing what they would have been used for. Shortly after, we embarked on the gigantic ship and explored the different decks. There was lots to see to help us understand exactly what it was like to live on a ship... just like a pirate! To top off the day, we were able to have some fun in the nautical themed activity area where we played games, dressed up and practiced lying in a hammock!

Creative Week -

Amazing Art!

Year 1 created some fantastic space scenes using a variety of art techniques. We splattered paint on some black card and then using plain paper and marbelling ink we created some jazzy paper for our planets. To finish, we cut out the planets and stuck them on the black card. As well as this we had a visit from House of Objects and created things from outer space using bits and bobs!

Creative Week -

Fizzing finale!

To finish this brilliant week we enjoyed 'The Punctuation Show' where we were immersed in an interactive and fun assembly, learning all about punctuation we can use in our writing! In the afternoon we enjoyed experimenting with baking powder and vinegar as we created 'fizzing moons'!

Easter Assembly

In preperation for our Easter Assembly, Year 1 wrote some fantastic Acrostic poems during our big write session. Some children were chosen to read these aloud in front of the whole school. They all read very well and with such confidence. Miss Stockport is very proud of you all!

Attendance Movie Afternoon!

As a reward for having the highest attendance in December, Year 1 watch The Lego Movie whilst enjoying some crisps, popcorn and juice! Well done Year 1! Keep it up!

Perfect Pancakes

On Pancake Day we enjoyed trying some delicious pancakes.  We chose from a variety of different toppings which we then added ourselves!

Rocket Man!

To add to the fun this week we had a special dance coach come in who taught us a new dance routine! As our theme this week is Space, we danced to the song Rocket Man by Elton John. We had lots of fun and picked up the moves very quickly!

RNLI

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed their visit from the RNLI lifeguards as they were taught about the dangers they may face when near a body of water. We learnt what precautions we must take in order to keep safe and what the different flags mean when we are by the beach. We also had a lot of fun practising our swimming techniques and pretending to surf!

Pirate Baking!

To finish our pirate topic we used flour, dried yeast, salt and water to create our very own simple pirate biscuits! Each child had a part in the process whether it was mixing the ingredients, kneading the dough, rolling the dough or cutting it in to shape. Although they were called pirate biscuits, we all thought they tasted just like bread rather than the sweet biscuits we are used too!

Our super senses!

Our new science topic is 'Humans and Animals' and during this particular lesson we learnt about our 5 senses and which parts of our body we use. We loved testing our senses with little games, activities and competitions! The tasting challenge was our favourite!

Creative Week -

Spectacular Science!

Linking to our book 'Welcome to Alien School' we have carried out some space themed science activities. We first tried our hand at making crystals using epsom salts and observed what had happened to the solution once a few hours had past. In the afternoon, we were lucky to take part in a workshop by Green Shift. We were able to see the type of food available to astronauts and how they would prepare the food in space. We compared the weight of the food before and after  adding some water.  As well as this ,we had lots of fun making balloon rockets and investigating how far they would travel!

Creative Week -

Do you believe in aliens?

What a fun-filled day! We had an incredible time as we came to school dressed as aliens and enjoyed a space themed picnic! We made our own rockets from fruit including pineapple, strawberries and grapes. Later on in the day, we enjoyed drawing constellations on the yard using stones and chalk.

Sports Relief

For Sport Relief, Year 1 took part in a keep fit session. The session lasted 20 minutes where we completed a range of exercise whilst listening to some of our favourite songs!
