Inclusive Curriculum and Support for Pupils with SEND at Blackfell Primary School

At Blackfell Primary School, we are committed to an inclusive curriculum that ensures every pupil can learn, participate, and thrive alongside their peers. We believe that all children, including those with SEND, should have equal opportunities to access the full range of learning experiences and achieve their very best. SEND is never a barrier to learning, and all pupils are supported to take part in every part of school life.

Our inclusive curriculum is designed to:

  • Set Appropriate Challenges: Every pupil is encouraged to reach their full potential through learning goals tailored to their abilities.
  • Adapt Learning: Lessons are carefully modified to meet individual needs. This may include different ways of completing tasks, recording learning, or delivering teaching.
  • Flexible Grouping: Pupils can learn in whole-class lessons, small groups, or one-to-one sessions, depending on what best supports their learning.
  • Support Neurodiversity: Classrooms are structured to support all learners, including those with neurodiverse needs, using tools such as visual timetables and self-regulation strategies.
  • Provide Emotional Support: Pupils develop strategies to manage their emotions and engage fully with learning. Staff use Emotion Coaching to help children understand and regulate their feelings.
  • Know Every Child Well: Our staff understand each pupil’s strengths and areas for development, ensuring teaching is personalised and sensitive to individual needs.

Through our inclusive curriculum, every pupil at Blackfell Primary School can learn, achieve, thrive and feel included, celebrating their strengths while receiving the support they need to succeed in all aspects of school life.

Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)

All Sunderland Local Authority’s (LA) maintained schools are required to meet the needs of all pupils. This common approach focuses on meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and; we are supported by the LA to ensure that all pupils regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school.

All schools are supported to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible.  The broad areas of SEND needs are:

-Communication and Interaction

-Cognition and learning

-Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties

-Sensory and or Physical

Information Report (Local Offer)

What is the Local Offer?

The Children and Families Bill was enacted in September 2014. From this date Local Authorities (LA) and schools are required to publish and keep under review information about services they expect to be available for children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) aged 0-25.  The LA refer to this as the ‘Local Offer’.   The intention of the Local Offer is to improve choice and transparency for families. It will also be an important resource for parents in understanding the range of services and provision in the local area.

What is the Special Educational Needs Information Report?

At Blackfell Primary School, we utilise the LA Local Offer to meet the needs of SEND pupils as determined by our school policy and the provision that the school is able to provide. This is referred to as ‘The Special Educational Needs Information Report’
