Whole School Black History Month

18 October 2023 (by cbarrass)

This October, Blackfell is celebrating Black History Month under the theme 'Saluting Our Sisters.' A whole school assembly was organised to delve into the meaning of this year's theme. Subsequently, each year group is exploring the life of a different heroine:

  • Reception and Year 1: Mary Seacole (1805-1881), known for her nursing efforts during the Crimean War.
  • Year 2: Claudia Jones (1915 – 1964), remembered for her advocacy for racial equality, women's rights, and workers' rights.
  • Year 3: Bessie Coleman (1892-1926), the first African-American and Native-American woman pilot.
  • Year 4: Rosa Parks (1913-2005), who initiated the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  • Year 5: Mae Jemison (b. 1956), the first African-American woman in space.
  • Year 6: Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), known for leading hundreds to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Each year group is engaging in a variety of activities and is producing work reflecting their understanding and appreciation of these remarkable individuals. The children are very interested, asking thoughtful questions, and enjoying researching their assigned characters. The produced work will be displayed within the school, and additional information from each year group can also be found on the class pages.
